Kashrut Guidelines

General:

  1. Dairy and meat products will not be served together at the same meal.
  2. Foods containing non-kosher ingredients (animal shortenings, seafood, etc.) are not to be brought to, and will not be served at Chavurah events.
  3. All foods served on Passover will be kosher for Passover.
  4. We encourage home cooked and baked goods as long as the ingredients themselves are kosher, regardless whether or not one's kitchen is kosher.
  5. We encourage store-bought baked goods to have a hechsher, and require it if we are meeting in a space whose kashrut policy requires such certification. [This detail will be announced as part of event information.]
  6. All pot-luck meals are dairy and/or vegetarian, unless otherwise announced.

Meat:

  1. All meat served at Chavurah events for which there is a cost (Seder, retreats, etc) will be kosher.
  2. Chavurah-organized dinners in members' homes may serve non-kosher meat if all invited guests agree.
  3. At pot luck meat meals (barbecues) kosher and non-kosher grills will be available.

Dairy:

  1. We do not require the use of hechshered cheese.

Wine and Grape Juice:

  1. We encourage the use of Kosher wine and Kosher grape juice for Kiddush, and require it if we are meeting in a space whose kashrut policy requires Kosher wine. [This detail will be announced as part of event information.]
  2. If non-hechshered juices are used for Kiddush, the juice should be pure grape juice, not a juice blend containing grape juice.
  3. Any wine or grape juice may be served as a beverage, unless the space we are meeting in requires Kosher wine or grape juice. [This detail will be announced as part of event information.]
